Last night we ventured off the resort for dinner and found this cute restaurant just a few yards away. Well, when we were trying to decide on our meal, one of the servers brought out this guy (bathynome geant) 😬 next to a rock lobster. It resembles a larger than life version of a bed bug and is apparently edible - it spanned from my fingertips to my elbow in length. 😳 Needless to say, this wasn’t a local (or not-so-local as we read later) delicacy we wanted to try, so instead we had a wonderfully prepared tuna tartare dish with citrus. #guadeloupe #burnsiesgo2guadeloupe #wanderlust

The best way to experience a culture is to get out there and immerse yourself in it. Resorts all feel the same to me when we travel, which is why I am petty adamant about staying at AirBnbs and renting a car for our trips. While I’m happy to be relaxing for two days where I don’t have to cook our meals and clean up afterwards, the experience has been like any other resort and nowhere near what the Guadeloupe culture is really like. 🤷🏻‍♀️This isn’t a complaint, it’s just an opinion and my observation. Two nights at this hotel (one of the least expensive ones we could find) are more expensive than 8 nights in AirBnbs and renting a car / food shopping. It puts things in perspective. #burnsiesgo2guadeloupe #guadeloupe

Today I’ve been soaking up all of the sun I can and reflecting a lot on life. This photo may not seem like a big deal to most people but I want to be fully honest - it’s terrifying and also empowering for me to share it. Body dysmorphia is a gnarly thing to cope with and it’s been a part of my daily life experience for more than half my life. Sometimes I feel strong, amazing and fit, and within a short span of time those good feelings and beliefs disappear in to the wind. I suffered from severe anxiety attacks before our trip, trying to find comfort and pride in my body while also acknowledging that I will be on beaches and inevitably, in a bathing suit. I ordered 15 different bathing suits from ASOS, all left me sitting on the floor of my bedroom in tears. All were returned. I ugly cried to my therapist about it, beating myself up for being so “silly” whereas what I really needed was to be kind to myself and allow myself to feel my feelings and understand the triggers. I worked on empowering myself for a few weeks (more on this at a later date) and was able to revisit shopping for bathing suits. I ordered a bunch off Amazon and surprisingly kept almost all of them. No tears. No hateful feelings towards myself. No anxiety. Instead I felt curvy, strong, fit and sexy. I was finally excited for our trip! 🏝 Not surprisingly, each day in Guadeloupe has been filled with different emotions and self esteem feelings for me - I know that not being able to eat/exercise how I normally would is a huge factor in my mindset. Knowing this helped me plan ahead to pack snacks l feel healthy consuming and exercise clothes for the occasional vacation workout. 🏃🏻‍♀️Even with these efforts, the battle with self confidence arose. These past few days I reminded myself that while the ups are temporary (for now) the downs are also only temporary. 👍🏻Here’s the hard part for most people to grasp: this is me, 32lbs lost since July 2017. So why wouldn’t I feel amazing? Because my mind hasn’t quite caught up with the rest of my body and that’s going to be a lifelong battle that I’m learning to face and sometimes conquer. #burnsiesgo2guadeloupe #fitnessjourney

May the faster and wiser rooster win. 😬 meanwhile the momma hen and her baby are just trying to find some food. I miss having pet chickens, they are fascinating to watch. #burnsiesgo2guadeloupe #guadeloupe #wanderlust #plagedelamalendure

Our attempt at eating local dishes this afternoon was quite disappointing. While the local prawns on top were good (there was only two of them), the rest of the seafood in this “salad” lacked any substance - the local crab and lobster were dry and had no meat for me to pick out. The most appealing part, the accras (fried crab and pepper fritters), are a local favorite - @burnsrichard said they were good. I was left still hungry and eating my packed dried apricots and trail mix. Rich’s meal was more filling but nothing memorable. You win some, you lose some. #burnsiesgo2guadeloupe #guadeloupe #wanderlust #plagedelamalendure
