What are you reading? Or what books have impacted you? Send me all of your recs. I’m currently digging through: Tribe of Mentors, Vanity Fair Diaries, We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed with Our Families, and Letters From a Stoic. Whew. That should sufficiently toy with my emotions.

My last shoot of the year ended with a sacred Mexican food: tamales. And not just any kind of tamale... @chefraygarcia’s tamales. 🙌🏽 Read @artbites_maite’s wonderful homage to this traditional holiday dish on @lifeandthyme (with photos by yours truly) by tapping the link in my profile.

Ahh.. what a rollercoaster of a year. It’s that time of year when we start to have those existential thoughts! 2017 helped me reshape the work I strive to accomplish, how to build teams, how to nurture a community and how to let go of things that will only slow you down. Ultimately all of this comes down to human interaction and how to navigate the psychology of it all. It hasn’t been easy and I’m constantly learning and applying, but the two things that have helped me through the noise: self-awareness and being a better observer of others. Observe the way people act the way they act, observe the way people work or think, observe the way people live, observe the minute details that matter the world to others, and question the observations—as a documentarian it’s critical to have your eyes wide open on everything but this has also made me more emotional, empathetic and self-aware of what not only drives me but where I need to improve myself and what I need to cut from my life. Anyway I’m a sucker for dissecting human behavior and learning about the psychology of teams, relationships, etc. (I’m pretty sure anyone who is a founder is forced to think about this) so if any of you want to chat more about this sort of stuff, hit me up. Happy holidays!

We can’t continue to build up the same type of people with hero narratives to then tear them down. We need new voices, more diverse and inclusive voices, to trailblaze a better and more equal playing field. I thought I couldn’t love LA even more than I did but then I found myself standing among some of the most supportive, beautiful and kind humans the city has to offer at @lifeandthyme’s 5 Year 🖤 (p.s. ya’ll were dressed so friggin dapper 👔👠👞)

If @lifeandthyme disappeared tomorrow, I at least made some incredible friends along the way. #blessed🙏

I can’t seem to put tonight’s @lifeandthyme 5 Year Anniversary into words, so the only thing that comes to my head is Biggie’s “It was all a dream...”
Thank you Chef @seekfreed for putting a @wpcatering LA street style hot dog in my hands so I could finally have a bite of food. 😘

The season finale episode of The Migrant Kitchen is now up to stream (link in profile) on @kcet. I was also crazy enough to direct 2 episodes this season so I took the reigns on this one which highlights a new generation of Vietnamese food in LA. These are real stories, real emotions and I’m so humbled that @kimluung @bnchef of @dinecassia, Diep of @goodgirldinette, and @mignardisesla of @porridgeandpuffs allowed me to enter their homes, their world and their backstories. This whole season has been a wild ride but it has given me so much to think about, so much humility and has made me even more proud to be from an immigrant background. ✊🏽 Go watch!

P.s. I need to give so much love to our composer Mr. Jose Parody (@joparody) who created all of the original music for this show. In particular, this episode’s score gets me worked up for its sheer beauty.

‪Um. We delivered the final episode of season 2 of The Migrant Kitchen. I’ve never felt a project break me down and push me like this season has—emotionally and creatively. But boy am I proud. ‬If you haven’t been watching, catch up on the link in my profile.
