"Is organized religion too inextricably bound to the status quo to save our nation and the world? Perhaps I must turn my faith to the inner spiritual church, the church within the church, as the true ekklesia and the hope of the world. But again I am thankful to God that some noble souls from the ranks of organized religion have broken loose from the paralyzing chains of conformity and joined us as active partners in the struggle for freedom." https://www.africa.upenn.edu/Articles_Gen/Letter_Birmingham.html (Art by Derek Russell)
A November 5, 2008 original / Picked it up on my way to work in Manhattan after celebratory fireworks blasting all night in my neighborhood of Crown Heights, Brooklyn / While we all know the headline is a myth / We're still people who hope beyond hope #obama#farewellobama
2017 will no doubt be the year our nation faces its shadow self, that unconscious aspect of our collectivity that's been politically bifurcated and has taken center stage. Now that our dark underbelly - profit over people - lies not only more exposed but celebrated, I'm curious, what routes of meaning will you choose in this new year? How do you plan to hope and to love and to live fully awake and fully alive? God's peace, friends!
It's been unboundedly inspiring to serve as Mother Julia's thurifer and server at St. Mary's Convent for Christmas Eve Midnight Mass with my family 3 years in a row. Inspiring to witness her witness of the cosmic grace God avails to us all. Honored to know her as teacher, mentor, and friend. Honored to witness her bring forth the power of intention and attention into the Eucharist. #sewanee#christmas#episcopal
