#storytime As the sun set on my first night back in Italy, the first change in my plans occurred. The producer informed me that instead of the two months I had planned to stay, it was only going to be two weeks. But that he would try to find me another place to do an internship. So knowing what I know now, the weather and the production size, two months was never a real possibility. I would blame Joe but I probably deserved it. Two things that did happen that day: I had pizza and a king bed. The pizza thing was a relief because the judgement is strong when you tell people you have been to Italy and never eaten pizza there. I didn’t actually mind the judgement as much as the annoying questions. And the bed, beds in Europe are small in comparison to the US. Obviously there are worse things than an uncomfortable bed. But when your world becomes uncomfortable it is hard to not cling to some sort of comfort wherever you can find it. #italy #travel #wine #winery #piedmont

#latergram Picking in Piedmont. I landed and three hours later I was picking grapes. Not sure if that is normal after 16 hours of travel of not. Indulge me for a moment and allow me to tell two stories related to the first statement. So first, when I was originally climbing the hills in April I was out of breathe after like 10 minutes. The owner told me about someone who asked to do a harvest and basically after a week couldn’t handle it. So I started to train. All of Piedmont is hand picked because of the slopes and probably economics haven’t caught up quite yet. So my pre-trip workout consisted of 10 minutes on the bike, 2.5 minutes rowing and 5 minutes on the stair stepper and repeat. So story two. Originally I was just going to go to do part of the harvest, about ten days. As I started to think about it I didn’t want my previous experience to be similar to my other two. Which was 15 hotels in 20 days. So I asked my contact, let’s call him Joe, if he would ask the producer if I could stay for the whole harvest. He said that would be okay. If I can explain Joe’s and I relationship I would call it ball busting. With me winning a majority of the exchanges. I have ordered him chocolate martinis in three countries and probably at least 30 times. If it didn’t annoy him I would not do it and if I didn’t like him I would not do it. The one thing that Joe told me was that I had to work hard and that it was going to be really hard. And told me not to embarrass him. So naturally I started working that day, later I would find out that everyone thought I was crazy. That would come in handy a little later in the story. #italy #wine #piedmont

#latergram landing in Lisbon. I have never been one to be able to sleep on a plane but I slept almost the whole time. As it turns out buying a one way ticket to Italy is somewhat anxiety inducing and briefly packing up your life is a lot of work. Those things mess with your sleep and felt like I hadn’t slept the prior weeks. At this point I could finally relax. I was still nervous. I didn’t really know what to expect but that I would just make the best of it. None of it quite went as planned and it took being away to truly appreciate it all. I wasn’t ever alone but I was definitely lonely at times. I definitely underestimated how that would feel and how that would effect me. But I did learn what I could live without. Most of the trip was spent in a small village. Not many people spoke English. My Italian isn’t that great. I understand it but speaking it was challenging. It is part of the reason I chose Italy. I have, since a child, had a fear of speaking. It is totally irrational but something that I am trying to conquer. I didn’t at all accomplish that goal but I see it in a totally different way. I am not there yet but getting closer. #portugal #lisbon

My goal for this year is 250 classes. Even after all this time, I am usually still the worst person in the class. I appreciate that challenge. It is also a constant reminder of the rewards of not wanting to do something and doing it anyways. It is also important reminder that the easiest way to fight inertia is consistency. #yoga #yogamom #yogaeverydamnday
