Waiting for the next dopamine hit.
Thank you @holladayphoto for the 📷!!! So much fun today just playing at ‘Ehukai Beach Park! Sandbar was so so much fun!!!
So grateful to @bushmansurfboards shaping me an 8’ 1” especially made for Sunset. Jeff Bushman has been shaping for over 40+ years and always has incredible stories to share about the history of surfing on the North Shore. He’s built so much innovation into these sunset boards, a thousand little tweaks to rocker, wider nose, pulled in narrow and thin tail, and amazing rails where he’s been able to balance a thick paddle of machine with thinner rails so you can really surf these boards effectively. I love his subtle “enjoy” he wrote underneath the board. We have so few craftsman left in the world today who have truly been a part of the history of their craft. I’m just super stoked right now, gotta go and catch some waves :)
A small one from the bay today. Should have been more patient and waited for nicer weather - but it kept raining a bunch. Really impressed with the courage of those who paddle out here.
So proud of Mancub - his first surf contest - he did so well - borrowed his sisters long board shaped by @bushmansurfboards (thank you Bushy!) - Vaughn surfed through to the finals and had a good showing - it was so amazin as a father to see him surf and work so hard during his heats. The entire #menahune#northshore contest was amazing to watch - fantastic kids with amazing talent!
1 min wave therapy. The ocean is the most powerful force on earth. We had solid waves today across the North Shore. Spend a little time with this clip and song and see if you don’t feel more relaxed and focused after it’s over.
Beautiful sunset tonight as we surfed Puena point as a family. The little things.
“UI Patterns No 1” 5x4 graphite, oil on stretched canvas. I’ve been creating digital interfaces for 20 years, thought it might be time to paint one. Things I’ve designed have forced humans to spend more time looking at their screens and less time on the world around them. Unlike other designers, my work has all come and gone, redesigned and iterated over - anything I designed at YouTube is now long gone. As designers of apps and software we have a responsibility to think about how we are impacting society and each other - I fear we may have done our job to well - made apps too addictive and too consuming. Do you recognize this interface? I’m sure you use it everyday - in exchange for free information you give them troves if personal data they then use to advertise to you - begging the question - who is gaining more benefit? Would love to hear your feedback on this concept - meanwhile I’m going to get back to painting the ocean - my love.
A lone surfer paddles out to Sunset Point this evening to catch a few overhead waves. All evening it was a bit of a mess then shaped up right before the sun went down. Sunset is always much bigger than it looks from shore.
Waimea Bay has incredible bouldering, some 30 foot high balls and a wide range of difficulty to play on. So proud of Mancub for overcoming his fears and sending a few of these climbs today. When he gets determined nothing can stop him.
Fun small waves yesterday for a family surf session in the afternoon.
