They show extreme intelligence, even problem-solving intelligence. Especially the big one. We bred eight originally, but when she came in she took over the pride and killed all but two of the others. That one... when she looks at you, you can see she's working things out. That's why we have to feed them like this. She had them all attacking the fences when the feeders came.

One year ago I challenged myself to go meat free. I was a HUGE carnivore - like, meat at every meal, and as snacks between meals. But I wanted a change. What was the figurative straw that broke the camels back? Raising chickens (for eggs, not meat). Caring for an animal that is so often seen only as a cheap meal. I realized their amazing and unique personalities, and of course I went down the rabbit hole of learning about the horrors of our meat industry - ugh. So I challenged myself on January 1, 2016 to go a year without meat. .
This year I’ve decided to remain faithful to my efforts and keep it going. I’ve witnessed weight loss and overall a much healthier feeling giving up meat, but what I’ve been most excited about is the challenge of cooking or going out to eat - and being forced to try new things (and I’ve come across many new favorites), things I would have never tried because defaulting to a burger or steak or piece of chicken was just too easy of a decision. .
I challenge each of you to try going meat free for a day, a week, or a month, or whatever. Expand your menu. Get out of your comfort zone. See how you feel. I’m not here to preach - just to share an important life change I’ve experienced and one I feel compelled to share.

Earlier this month I posted about Callie, the 15.5yo girl that needed to be re-homed asap. The outpouring of support was truly amazing and today sweet old Callie rode off with her new mom and Schnauzer sister - to live out the rest of her days on a farm in western NC, complete with cows, goats, chickens, and a few other canine siblings. While Callie may have had a rough past, she’s about to really live it up - and we were able to send her on her way with a check for $700, from donations made by friends, neighbors, and complete strangers.

Following Callie’s departure, I drove over to the former owner’s business to let her know the outcome. She was teary eyed and just kept saying β€˜thank you’ while I told her about the amazing life in store for Callie - we spent the next half hour exchanging pupper war stories. While the circumstances for Callie’s re-homing were unfortunate, ultimately this story had a pretty damn great ending.

THANK YOU to Clay Martin & Neuse River Golden Rescue for stepping up to help, thank you to everyone who chipped in with your very generous donations, and thank you to every person who helped share Callie’s story and help land her in her forever home.
