Digging through boxes and I found this gem for #TBT!! Nike held a dunk contest during NBA All Star weekend. They wanted a real dunk contest with real ballers, and I was invited after winning the event in New York. A week before the event, my partner A-Train was involved in a plane accident, and couldn’t attend. I reached out to Chris Franklin to sub in. The contest had 2 components: dunking and dribbling. Who better to get the nod than ‘Mr. Handles!
The judges were Rasheed Wallace, Gary Payton and the greatest dunker ever Vince Carter. I just worked with VC on a commercial shoot in Toronto, where he showed me how to do his Reverse 360, so when he saw me, he said: “You gotta show me something to get a 10 bro.” Challenge accepted.
The gym was packed and I was feeling good. Playing with the Harlem Wizards got me used to dunking in front of crowds, so I was unfazed, but you could see it in the eyes of my competition: Fear. I wanted to get that 10 from Vince because if I did, I’d win.
A-Train and I have 2 dunks we would do, and we’d been practicing my special dunk. Chris and I got no time to practice, and I didn’t want to show anyone what my special dunk was. We worked on the timing in the hotel room, then a little at the shoot-around.
Back to live action, you had to do 3 dunks: Reverse, Windmill and 360. Of course I did VC’s Reverse 360, got 10’s from GP and Sheed, 9 from Vince. For the Leap of Faith, I took off from half-step beyond the free throw line winning that event. Chris did his dribbling routine and won that. We were running away with this thing because guys were missing their dunks. Time for the Dime & Dunk aka The Big Joker.
I had Chris sit in a chair by the dotted circle and hold the ball with 2 hands. I got nail polish and put it on the ball, then lit the ball on fire. Chris held the ball up for everyone to see. I ran up, Chris lofted the ball into the air, I jumped over Chris and I caught it, still on fire. The ball stayed lit until I dunked it through. The place went nuts and I just looked at Vince. He said “You got it” and gave me that 10! That night I became The People’s Champ thanks to Chris Franklin and Conrad McRae.
Gave a bunch away, sold a few on EBay. Now the collection is down to 150. Giving away more to help the hurricane victims, but I wanted to take a moment to reflect. When I was a kid, I never had more than 2 pair, so this is a blessing. Shout out to my Nike Family for always keeping me fresh. I hope the pairs I pass give someone comfort and allows them to be fresh too.
I officially have a high schooler 😫
Congrats Coach Couch on winning back to back Chips vs Sean Bell All Stars! Coach called me last night and said he needed me in the building to cheer the young guys on. Just wish I could've suited up! #WeAreDyckman
