I am looking for solace in the things I know to be true.
    .
Love is real, and so strong it will make you move worlds. Liars destroy, and rip people apart leaving a wake of pain and destruction in their path. The climate is changing, and we may have already lost life as our grandparents knew it. Oil companies cannot be trusted. Watching golden pink sunsets at the end of each day is a perfect meditation. Fresh squeezed grapefruit juice makes every morning better. Coming home to mom melts my heart every time. Cookies, especially warm chocolate chip ones, are delicious. Cows are funny to watch.
    .
I return to Shakespeare: no legacy is so rich as honesty.
    .
America is young, and still has a few very important things to learn about life.

Not going to lie, it feels a bit like living in an alternate universe since the US election. All the hate crimes, lies, shady dealings and the depressing realization that we are living in a post-democracy America make my stomach feel sick. Not to mention, we're all so appalled by the lack of social justice that we're forgetting to talk about the environment.
    .
We'll make it through these dark days ahead. We'll need to support each other more than ever though. Oh, and spend time outside in nature too. It helps.

I love wandering through the forest and discovering little beauties like this lucky little guy. 🍄🍀 .
It's been strange times since the US election, and spending time in nature has been comforting for me at least. It's been heartbreaking, really, to think about the destruction and regression to come.
    .
This beautiful planet, these lush beds of clovers, green mossy trees, flowing rivers, this place is home. We'll have to stand up even stronger to protect it.

"There is something that you can do better than anyone else in the whole world," says Deepak Chopra.
    .
It's that one thing that's slightly different, more creative or unique from how anyone else does it. This is the thing we must find within ourselves.
    .
When you do this thing, you forget time, you glow, you make humanity just a little bit better. People will thank you for it.

I wrote this the day after.
    .
This morning we awake to horror, my fellow Americans. To a historic shame on our country. We have collectively failed our children, we have failed women, minorities, Mother Earth, the world, progress and all good things.
    .
Let this be the galvanizing force for uprising. Let this be the inspiration that finally eliminates your apathy. We must stand up together against this hate--against bullies, bigotry, dishonesty, racism, sexism, xenophobia--against the terror of white men. It may be a long road, but our voices must be heard, for what we know deep down is good and right cannot be silenced and will need to be fought for more fervently than ever.
    .
We cannot stand silent anymore because those conversations with extended family are uncomfortable. We must get up every day and shame this evil behavior, for it is on the wrong side of good. We must have tough conversations with hard love, because what is right will prevail. This is the good fight.
    .
Dark days are ahead my friends. Get angry. Then do something about it.

@lovekaurdotcom I mean, I personally haven't seen too much positive media. I've seen protests and many media people online trying to point out how we must vigilantly avoid normalizing the entire situation because his actions and many things about this are not normal. If we accept hatred as the new normal, we are doomed.

    .
Come on America! It's time to vote against what we all know is wrong in our hearts— vote against hatred, racism, sexism, patriarchy, ignorance, discrimination, bigotry, dishonesty, destruction. We cannot be on the wrong side of history, we will not be on the same side as hate. Stand up for what is right. Now's the time. California, west coast peeps, it's not too late.
    .
If you are stressed as we wait for the election results this evening, here's a peaceful image of a happy, mossy forest near Portland. We must protect our home, these last remaining wild places, too.

Oh those golden sunsets on the Pacific--there's nothing else quite like them. When I first packed up my old '95 Toyota Camry in January 2007 and set off alone to drive across the country from Michigan, I ever thought I'd stay West this long. I remember finally arriving in LA after that two week journey, driving into the blistering orange sun. I had braved winter storms in the Midwest, meandered across rolling plains, stayed on a Native American reservation, and couchsurfed in Flagstaff before exploring the glorious Grand Canyon alone.
    .
That solo cross country trip was one of my most memorable times as it gave me the luxury of solitude to think about what was to come, to learn to be alone in nature, to feel the breadth of our expansive country. I was 25. I felt so much wonder for what lay ahead.
    .
I drove straight to my friend Ben's work when I arrived in LA. I remember pulling in that parking lot, feeling sort of baffled at what I'd just done. But we hugged and laughed at the unlikeliness of me standing there. Now what?
    .
Nearly a decade and a million stories later, I haven't quit California just yet. That journey was once in a lifetime, a passage into the next chapter, a page that everyone turns in some form. I never could have guessed what would unfold while on that open road, but it's all been more than I could have dreamed--love, beauty, pain, sadness, the world. All those things life gives us. And those golden sunsets, they still get me every time.
    .

What if joy was your only metric for success? Where would you be now? What would you be doing differently? Anything at all?
    .
I'm thinking a lot about turning points, paths, what some call life's dharma, or the thing you were meant to do with your time on this earth. Sometimes it's hard to stop the chaos and create time to reflect on all this. These last few months, I've been fortunate to have won a Fellowship with an executive coach who has been gently guiding me through these types of reflections.
    .
And here is one thing I've known all along, but that often gets clouded by what other people project onto me, or what society says: Stop trying, just allow. If you let it, life will happen as it was meant to.
