I had breakfast with travelers from different countries at the guesthouse the next morning. Everyone had a little self introduction at the breakfast table. I said I traveled to Seoul from Vladivostok, which caught everyone's attention. A man from Austria started chatting with me about my trip and what he wanted to explore in Seoul.
•
It was interesting that I heard one girl from Indonesia and two girls from Japan were there for Korean pop music concerts. I had seen French girls danced to Korean music at the Champ de Mars in Paris, which surprised me already. The name of the girl from Indonesia was M. She said she was there for an audition to become a member of a new girl group. She even told me the difference among huge entertainment companies in detail. I could only stared in wonder at how the impact of Korean pop music was.
•
The host at the guesthouse was a Korean young lady. She was so kind to find that I had no plans for Seoul, and suggested that I could go visit DMZ or Jingfu Palace. I had no idea about DMZ at that time, but I found it quite interesting after her brief introduction of it. However, visiting DMZ costed quite a bit, and it's impossible to go there without joining any tours. Joining tours was against my will at that moment, so instead of going to DMZ, I visited JIngfu Palace. Looking back from now, it was a great pity to miss out on the chance to visit DMZ at that time.

I arrived at Donghae in the noon time. I said goodbye to my fellow travelers, and began another short chapter of my solo travel. South Korea was a country I had not set my foot on, but the culture was definitely more familiar to me than Russia.
•
I did not encounter any problems at the immigration. It did take me a while to understand how to take a bus to Seoul, but the ajumma (Korean for middle aged woman) at the ticket vending office was super kind as to indicate me the way to the bus stop. When I finally got on the bus, everything felt like Taiwan to me, even though I could not understand a word in Korean.
•
It took me 3 hours to get from Donghae to Seoul. It was already dark when I arrived there. With skyscrapers lighting up the night, Seoul looked pretty modern and attractive, but I was too exhausted to explore the city at night. I decided to take a good rest at the guesthouse and gather some info for the next day.

A couple, the man from U.K. and the woman from Slovenia, would visit Australia after their trip in Japan. They were testing out each other and seeing if they were suitable companions for traveling. If yes, they might get married after the trip. Another guy from U.K. said that he was doing a road trip with his jeep. He had sent his car from Vladivostok harbor to the U.S. and he would pick it up after his trip in Japan. He explained that British people still needed a visa to travel to U.S. I was stunned to hear that there was no visa-free relationship between these two closest allies.
•
V said he would visit Japan as the last destination of this journey. I could see the light in their eyes. They were still passionate about new adventures. I, on the other hand, after traveling for almost 4 months, started to feel less excited about traveling. It was not like I miss people or things back home and I wanted to settle. I could still pack and go, but I was less tempted to do so. I had to admit that the passion and energy had been lost somewhere on the road.
•
After our meal and chat, the Korean middle aged man in my room was super kind to invite us to the karaoke. Although there was a distinct language barrier and we did not know any Korean songs, we still went there for a while, and listened to a group of Korean middle-aged men singing. I was amazed by the Korean hospitality, and could start to imagine how interesting the trip to Korea would be.

The ferry from Vladivostok to Donghae took around 12 hours. The largest groups of passengers were Koreans and Russians. The ferry sailed to Sakaiminato city in Japan as well, but Japanese passengers were rarely seen.
•
I shared a room with 8 people, mainly Korean middle aged men. When I sorted out my luggages, one of the Korean men said something to me in Korean, but I couldn't understand it. I could only reply "sorry" with an embarrassed smile.
•
Soon I rejoined the group again with V and other travelers, and had a meal in the restaurant area inside the ferry. Listening to other travelers' stories and plans was always fun. Most of the western traverlers, including V, were going to Japan. I was the only one who was going to disembark in South Korea.

M accompanied me to the boarding gate, gave me a big hug and said goodbye to me. I thanked him for taking care of me along the last half of my trans-Siberian trip. Although none of us knew when we would meet up next time, but the things happened on this trip had already been deeply rooted in our memory.
•
The whole ferry was waiting for me. When I finally returned to the upper deck, V and other friends showed up and asked what happened to me. V said he saw a staff got me off the ferry, and he thought probably I would not be able to make it back. He said I should start a blog with the title "between borders" because I was literally caught between borders.
•
As we chatted about my mishap, the ferry started to move. From the distance I saw M was on the platform waving goodbye, and I waved back. I knew finally I was heading back to a culture more familiar to me, but somehow I started to miss Russia already.

I expressed my worries and explained how I got into this trouble. On the other end of the phone, the representative kept saying that he would help me through this. He suggested to talk with the Korean guy on the phone, so I handed over my phone to him. They started to talk in Russian fluently and I could not understand even a word, but I could tell that the Korean guy was still pretty pissed. The phone was handed back to me after their talk, and the representative on the phone said that he would ask the officials in Taiwanese representative office in Seoul to make a phone call to make sure that I did not need any visa to enter South Korea. He asked me to wait for a while and said don't worry before he hung up.
•
M arrived at the office shortly after the phone call. He started talking with the Korean guy in Russian, but got the exact same answer. He tried to comfort me by saying that I could stay longer in Vladivostok or I could fly back to Taiwan the next day. I said my visa would expire tomorrow, so it seemed that I had no choice but to leave Russia on that very day.
•
As we spoke, the phone on the Korean guy's desk rang. He picked up the phone and began to talk in Korean. I could feel that the muscle on his cheeks loosened a bit. After he finished the call, he turned to me and said "sorry, it's my mistake. You can board the ferry now. Sorry to keep you waiting for so long." He said that our embassy had explained to him, and the Taiwanese representative in Moscow called me again. I expressed my gratitude to him, and he said it's no big deal and wished me good luck.

"But South Korea tourist visa is not required for Taiwanese citizens. Our governments has established a mutually visa-free relationship." I tried to convince him in a haste with the facts I know, even though I didn't have any official documents with me. My Russian tourist visa would expire on the next day, so I was worried that I would be trapped there.
•
"No! You need a visa to enter Korea!" He replied almost exactly the same sentence, this time with anger. I could tell that he was not in a good mood.
•
I began to get anxious. My mind was filled with the situations I would encounter when my Russian visa expired. Solutions. Solutions. I made a call to
M and explained what happened and how worried I was. He said he was in a business meeting, but he would come immediately as it ended. The Korean guy sitting in front of me was pretty unhappy and asked me to leave. "Let me explain." I replied as to buy some time.
•
As I anxiously scrolled my phone, I found a screenshot I took before I left for this trip. There were two phone numbers of Taiwan Representative Office in Moscow. But the time in Vladivostok was 7 hours ahead of Moscow, which meant it was still midnight in Moscow. I tried the first number, but no one answered. In distress I made another phone call to the second number. Finally a man picked up. He replied in Russian.

On the day I left Vladivostok, something went wrong.

[ travelers I met on the way: V ]
•
On the day I left Vladivostok, I met up with V at the ferry terminal. V was from Netherlands. I first met him in a hostel in Listvyanka, and found that we were the only two people that were both heading Vladivostok as our final destination in Russia and then going to South Korea by ferry. Although he was going to leave Irkutsk earlier than I did to explore other cities in Siberia, we said that we could arrange to meet up in Vladivostok if we were to leave for South Korea on the same day. And then we did.
•
The immigration officer checked my passport with hesitation, sized me up for a while, but still stamped on my passport in the end. I replied with a smile and got all my belongings together to board the ferry and found the cabin where I were going to stay for the night. Just as I were to unpack my luggage, a ferry staff turned up and said there was a problem with my boarding, and that I had to return to the head office at the ferry terminal. I had no choice but followed him back to the office.
•
The head office was at the back of the ticket office. A Korean guy, seemingly the owner of the ferry company or a manager, sat at the back of a desk. He motioned me to sit down in front of him, and asked me to take out my passport for him to check again. After a thorough check, he said, "You need a visa to enter Korea, which you don't have. So you cannot board the ferry."

In Vladivostok we had a fight with local youngsters.
•

•
[ travelers I met on the way: M ]
•
M was from Vladivostok, so when we arrived there, he said he would show me around, and he did. He took me to the place where he dated his high school girlfriend, the places he went to school, and places where he normally chill out . The best thing about having a local as your friend and travel guide was that the whole city became his personal history.
•
One day after watching a football game, he invited me for some vodka and kebabs with his friends on a beach. His girlfriend was studying Mandarin Chinese in Beijing, so she was really happy to have someone to practice with. We had a great time there and I found I was half drunk when we left the kebab place.
•
We only walked for a few minutes before we noticed 3 youngsters were following us. M's girlfriend was drunk and began swearing to them. The youngsters got irritated, ran up to us, and tried to punch her. It was that moment M and his male friend stepped out and got into fight with those youngsters. I volunteered to fight as well, as M and his friend were around 50, it would be hard to fight 3 youngsters in their 20s. But his friend's girlfriend pulled me aside. "You are a foreigner here," she said, "you might get into trouble if you get into a fight. M and N grew up here. They can cope with this. Just watch."
•
The result of the fight was in our favor: the youngsters apologized and ran away. M said sorry to let me see this part of Vladivostok, but this kind of fight was pretty common when they grew up.

Just watch." • The result of the fight was in our favor: the youngsters apologized and ran away. M said sorry to let me see this part of Vladivostok, but this kind of fight was pretty common when they grew up.

In the middle of nowhere, an old woman stared into the space for a long time as if she was waiting for someone, perhaps Godot, or it was just my interpretation of the situation.

M was a man with stories, and was very charismatic to talks with. In the interval of inhaling through his cigarettes and exhaling, he told me how Russians saw the world was very different from the way Americans did. Russians were not mainstream "western" or Asian. When asked to follow the mainstream western value and trend, most likely they would frown. However, to Asians, Russians just seemed too outlandish. They just wanted to build their country in their own way, not to be categorized in any pre-existed ideologies.
•
M was a devout Buddhist. In search of his inner peace, he had been to Tibet, India, and Nepal. He said the most dangerous pilgrimage he had was traveling to a monastery near Lukla airport because the landing was like a near death experience.
•
M had visited Taiwan once. In early 1990s, he had been to Taiwan on a business trip. Staying in a pretty shabby hotel, his first experience in Taipei was not pleasant at all. All he could remember about Taiwan was that old and shabby hotel, and an unfinished deal.

Riding the train along Siberia, the immense wilderness overwhelmed me and devoured the time.

I forgot exactly how I got into conversation with M. All I could remember was that we had a great time chatting at the end of the train carriage when he smoked cigarettes.
•
M was from Vladivostok and was around 50 when I met him. Being a jade trader, he had just finished a business trip to his factories in Irkutsk and was going back to Vladivostok. He spoke fluent English and Japanese. He said he was a Japanese major in a top-notch university in Vladivostok, where he had won several English and Japanese speech contests.
•
M said most Russians would bring folded knife on a train trip because it always came in handy whenever they need to slice sausage, ham, salmon, and bread. Watching how Russians make different style of cuisines on the train using raw material was the most pleasant experience during travel. You would soon find out how they love to share food. After a few shots of vodka, glasses of beer, and a round of Russian sandwiches, they immediately became your best friends, even though you were still speaking different languages.

At 4am I left the city center of Irkutsk, carrying a small suitcase along with my backpack. It was 4 degree Celsius and every gust of wind felt like ice. The whole city was still at sleep, and I was about to set on the second part of my trans-Siberian journey.
•
In order to catch the midnight train, I had to refuse a drinking invite at the hostel, went to
sleep real early, and sneaked out of the bunk bed like a ninja, trying not to wake anyone up with my clumsy movement.
•
The streets were dimly lit. Darkness spread itself and devoured most of what I could see. I could solely count on my white breath to light up every step before me. My luggage clattered in the silence for 20 minutes before I finally arrived at the train station.
•
The station seemed asleep and was not expecting anyone. 2 elder passengers dozed off after staring in the blank for a while. Apparently I was the only conscious person at that moment. It was at that moment I can fully experience my own existence.
