β€ͺTragedy can tear at the flesh of a marriage. Disappointment can sink it fast. But I'm realizing today that our shared sorrow over the incoming president has actually strengthened my husband's and my relationship. ‬Even tired, at the end of a long day, we find ourselves curled up in deep discussion about morality, compassion, and the path ahead--the sorts of conversation that are effortless at the start of a relationship, but can parch themselves silent in the warm climes of familiarity. This strengthening of our small twosome gives me hope for what's next. As we unite at the personal level, we are empowered to confront at the political level, to see our quiet conversations echoed and amplified in the community at large. We are each just one, yes. Even in a couple. But we are mighty. Don't forget that. Have your long talks at night. Read great books and chat about them in the darkness. Reach out to your neighbors in love and solidarity. Sow your seeds of rage in fertile relationships and positive action, and you--WE--will be okay. Even tomorrow. And the next day and the next. xx.

A super duper much-needed day in the sunshine. I even felt a little spring in the air! January's my birthday month, and snow's pretty much my spirit animal, so this time of year has always been special to me. But this time around, the winter blues are feeling a little bluer than usual, and--if I'm honest--I'm kinda ready to get on with it. Anyone else struggle sometimes in the darker months? If you do, please don't suffer alone (unless, of course, that's what your soul is craving). There are lots of us out there to help/listen/hug if you need it. xx.

I used to have a hard time with winter blues. Lately tho, I find the cure is to get out in it and have as much fun as possible. Snowshoeing, skiing, skating, hiking with friends makes it pretty wonderful.

β€ͺCan we all just take a moment to reflect on the time I called my husband "Mike" during my U.S. immigration interview? (His name, as you might recall, is actually Matt.) In my defense, it really was merely an unfortunate melding of the words "bike" and "Matt" -- the sort of thing one does while teeth-chatteringly nervous. But still.... Mike. God bless that dear interviewer for not kicking me straight out the door and across the border. (And God bless my husband for not turning to me and exclaiming, "Who the heck is Mike??")

We just said goodbye to my parents after three long visits in just three short months. What a gift. Their presence out here has made me feel so much closer to the life I left behind in Canada. But tonight, as the door closed finally behind them, I felt the almost physical snapping of an elastic band, the hurtling away again of so much that is dear and familiar.... Gracie's going to be hugged like crazy for the next little while.

While typing away (badly) on my phone yesterday, autocorrect (as always) swooped in to the rescue. And what was intended to be a boring old "of the wilderness" was algorithmically reimagined as "of the wild nearness...." Ohhhh I nearly swooooooned. 😍 Poetry seems to pop up when I least expect it. My hope is always to position myself, hands and heart open, to receive it. #ofthewildnearness

I know a number of people right now whose hearts are feeling bruised and whose minds are feeling troubled. And rightfully so. It seems some days that we are entering a post-compassion era. For the empathic, the vulnerable, the poets, the creators, the great thinkers and the deep feelers, this is evoking a terror the likes of which we've only read about in history books. To you I wish this: Days spent outdoors. Nights spent pondering the stars. Deep cleansing breaths before you again knot your psyche with the twistings of the day's news. Be here. Be now. But also be beyond the makings of man. And if you must fight for one thing today, fight for the protection of the wilderness. Because without these spaces, we'll go mad.

    Cool shot!

I'm enjoying a few last glimpses through my iPhone 5S before I move fully over to my 7. The truth is, I adore this planet through every lens. Long before my telephone became my photographic sidekick, I could be found with my face smushed against whatever camera I could get my hands on. And each showed me something new to love, not just about itself, but about the world it nudged me into. Explore! Explore! Explore! This is not just the motto of the Instagram generation. It's a restless heart's mantra. It's a love letter to the ancient urge to know more, see more, understand more. To step outside ourselves. And then step further still.
