@kellianderson yes! Planning to hit Teshima for a couple hours tomorrow. I did the research on the Teshima art museum awhile back but told the others not to look so that they could be surprised. Though I'm not familiar with the archive, thanks for the recommendation!

@sgoralnick :). Go to teshima on the ferry and rent an electric bike and see the teshima art museum and the archive d'couer if you haven't yet. (Better if you don't google those sites first)

@belle.n.avie we did an overnight on Hakone and it was great. But we were in Tokyo so it was pretty close by. If you are only going to be in Kyoto it seems unnecessary to go so far out of your way. Cursory search of "Kyoto onsen" yielded some results, so I feel like you could make it happen.

    belle.n.avie

Thanks for the great info. I really wanted to do an onsen but I hear Kyoto isn't known for those...and that id have to travel to Hakone. True?

@belle.n.avie this ryokan was amazing, but we also found surprisingly great options on airbnb for Kyoto. We stayed in airbnb.com/rooms/8094396, a two bedroom house with immaculate design details. I think it was the best Airbnb I've ever stayed in.

@belle.n.avie sorry I read too quickly, you asked for tips on preparation. Hm. Other than preparing to spend a lot of money and walk around a lot, I would say to learn to say hello, thank you, excuse me, and yes/no. Google maps is extremely useful for navigating around, so if you don't have an international data plan on your smartphone, just look up "rent wifi hotspot Japan" and make arrangements to do that. I made a custom google MyMaps ahead of time with all the places we wanted to go and found that super useful. If you're traveling around, check out Hyperdia (website or app) for train routes/times/costs. Most of my research centered around Tokyo (another friend did Kyoto), but popular/high end hotel reservations we did 3 months out; dinners 2 or 1 month beforehand. Generally if there's spots I want to go I just read reviews on TripAdvisor to determine how or when to book or what to do or how to find tricky places. Hope that helps!

@belle.n.avie Hey! "Tips" is an extraordinarily broad question, especially since I have no frame of reference of who you are, what you like to do, and how you like to travel 😅. Check our #japanarama2017 hashtag, and follow the stories of the 4 of us. We're posting from every single location, consider those the tips! We booked Hiiragiya 3 months in advance. Just email them and ask what they have available. Cost varies and is dependent on type of room, which wing you're in, day of the week, food, number of people, etc.

Hi~ im planning a trip to kyoto next month. Please share any tips u have concerning preparation before u got to japan. Also how early did u book to stay at this wonderful ryokan? Would u mind if i asked how much it is per person? Their website only shows a range.

@sgoralnick Really?! Fun trivia. Do you want a swatch of the fabric from The Gates? They have our swatches on the first day and I got two. That was when I lived at 81st/Columbus.

@nachaerdociain it's not necessarily nearby, but we had dinner at nishiki warai (pancake omelette concoctions at on-table grill) as it was open late-ish and it was a hit.

@nachaerdociain found a helpful blog post entitled "How To Have The Best Experience At Fushimi Inari Shrine" on "You Could Travel". They say to arrive 30-45 mins before sunset. If you wanna wander and take photos with some light, I say give yourself an extra hour.

Never really liked a gin and tonic until it was carefully crafted with Kyoto gin and German juniper syrup. Barman Takeshi Matsuzawa took amazing care of us at Bar B&F, the sister space to #BarBenFiddich upstairs. Couldn't have asked for a better introduction to Tokyo cocktails!

    Cool!
