DJ: Say cheese, Diego.
Diego: I will bitch slap you into next week with my flipper if you ever tell me what to do again.
DJ: I love you too buddy.
Good to spend more time with the animals and marine biologists at the Atlanta Aquarium with the ohana this past weekend.
Important to see first hand the good work being done behind the scenes.
My twin Diego here was rescued in San Diego from underneath a police car. Crazy story, but he’s a big (500lbs) happy boy these days.
Especially after we shared some tequila together.

Photo by @amivitale | Zebras run through the Zambezi Delta. Wildlife in this area was virtually decimated by years of civil war, but investments in anti-poaching by @zambezedeltaconservation made the land welcoming again to animals. Zebra populations went from almost zero to many hundreds. Today, nearly all wildlife have come back virtually to capacity, with the exception of the apex predators. So the team orchestrated the largest international lion translocation ever undertaken. Twenty-four lions were transported from South Africa to the conservancy. It is estimated that that the population could grow to as many as 500 within 15 years; over 30 cubs have been born in the past 10 months.

I covered this historic undertaking for my recent @natgeo story. Learn more by reading "How the world’s largest lion relocation was pulled off." @natgeoimagecollection @thephotosociety @cabelafamilyfoundation #protectearth #conservation #zebras #stoppoaching #mozambique

Photo by @brentstirton | New Dehli, India: Today is International Monkey Day. I’m posting this picture to remind people that monkeys are meant to live in wild spaces, and not in the confines that humans often set for them. This was a small traveling circus I saw in India a few years ago. When the male monkey did the trick correctly, he was rewarded with a cigarette. The audience thought it was hilarious, but maybe it’s not so funny if you’re the monkey. It’s complex; when baby monkeys are sold as pets and then reared by humans, they often know no other life. Sometimes they are treated well and loved, other times they are simply a tool for economics. Personally, I don’t believe this trade should exist; it usually means the mother of the baby was killed in the process. I prefer to think of these animals jumping from tree to tree, free in the environments that make sense for them. #monkey #endangeredspecies #conservation #internationalmonkeyday

Photo by @amivitale | Veterinarians wait for a lion to wake up from its sedation after being flown to Mozambique from South Africa and then driven to an enclosure. Twenty-four lions were moved in what was the largest conservation transport of wild lions across an international boundary in history. Decades of civil war and poaching had all but decimated the animals in this area, and careful management had brought back nearly all the other indigenous species—with the exception of these apex predators. So far all are thriving, and already over 30 cubs have been born since December. I covered this historic undertaking for my recent @natgeo story. Photo by Cristina Mittermeier @Mitty | It was a lucky shot to fit an 80-foot long whale into a single frame. I took this photograph on my first immersion in the Azores, and I remember thinking to myself, boy, this is easy! I was wrong. Sleek and surrounded by nothing but the dark waters of the open ocean, the blue whale resembles a rocket ship suspended in space. They dive deep and they swim fast, so getting in the right place at the right time without disturbing their feeding is really hard. Blue whales are the largest animals to have ever existed, reaching mind-boggling dimensions of 100 feet long and upwards of 200 tons—and all on a diet composed almost exclusively of krill, tiny shrimplike crustaceans! Blue whales don't have any natural predators, but in the 1800s and early 1900s, they were hunted to the edge of extinction at the hands of humans. Today, they remain endangered, and we are still fighting to protect them. Follow me @Mitty to find out how you can join our movement at @SeaLegacy and support a healthy and abundant ocean. #Whale #History #TurningTheTide #Ocean #Conservation

Photo by @stevewinterphoto | One of the lucky few: Donner was rescued from a major breeding and cub-petting facility in Colorado—and now thrives at a true sanctuary, @turpentinecreek in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Many roadside zoos use tiger cubs for bottle feeding, petting, and photo ops—and discard or kill them when they’re too big and dangerous to pet: it’s the dark underbelly of hands-on wildlife tourist attractions. Many are nonprofits and pose as rescues or sanctuaries. This is not conservation: Not one captive-bred tiger has ever been successfully released into the wild! You can find a list of true sanctuaries at the Big Cat Sanctuary Alliance. Our story, “The Tigers Next Door,” appears in the December issue, produced with writer Sharon Guynup. #wild #tigers #zoo #conservation #tigerconservation

Photos by @brentstirton | // Supported by Nat Geo Society/Wyss Campaign for Nature committed to protecting 30% of the planet by 2030. // For the December issue, I spent time with African Parks conservation rangers in Zakouma, in Chad, and Garamba, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. I was briefly a witness to their phenomenal dedication as well as to the cost of that dedication. From months away from their families in spartan conditions, to conflict with heavily armed poachers and militias, to working closely with tracker dogs and technology, these people make an incredible contribution to ensuring the survival of a global conservation heritage. The goal of African Parks is to have 20 parks under management by 2020. Without these men and women, that would be impossible. I’m very grateful to all the AP rangers who helped us to tell their story. @natgeo @africanparksnetwork #conservation #endangeredspecies #campaignfornature

Photos by @brentstirton | // Supported by Nat Geo Society/Wyss Campaign for Nature committed to protecting 30% of the planet by 2030. // African Parks is a nonprofit conservation organization that takes on the rehabilitation and management of national parks, in partnership with governments and local communities. I photographed in five parks, and in the course of that whirlwind tour, I caught a glimpse of the extraordinary effort to conserve endangered species in some of the toughest places. This included black rhino care and translocation, rare Kordofan giraffes, West African lions and crocodiles, and the world’s largest elephant herd. African Parks currently manages 16 national parks and protected areas in 10 countries, covering almost 11 million hectares. That represents the largest and most diverse portfolio of parks under management on the African continent. They do this job with a skeleton crew, often living in spartan conditions for years at a time. It’s an incredible effort to ensure the survival of a global conservation heritage. Their goal to is have 20 parks under management by 2020. I’m very grateful to all the AP people who helped us tell their story. @africanparksnetwork #conservation #endangeredspecies #campaignfornature
