It's #FeedbackFriday and today's focus is on Park Farm in Rowton, Shrewsbury. The Evans family added 2 new sheds to their farm at the start of the year and included a Justsen 995kw Biomass Boiler matched with a Reka Straw Chopper and Conveyor.
Since then we've been back up to Park Farm to see how the most recent rollout has helped them to progress and we were fortunate enough to grab a couple of minutes with Todd Evans who was kind enough to share with us some of his thoughts.

To really appreciate how beautiful the British countryside is, you've got to take to the skies, so we thought we'd share the view from our draperDRONE over John Smith's Swarbrick Hall Farm in Lancashire.

When John first approached us, he was a new broiler farmer and knew he needed to work with a company who could provide the support and advice he needed for his new venture. John built 2 sheds, and his first delivery of 90k chicks arrived in May 2015.

Having sought advice from his neighbouring farmer and visited a number of installations, he was quickly sold on the draperGROUP philosophy and expertise. He required full lighting, heating and ventilation systems that were uncomplicated to operate for a beginner. - T H E - S O L U T I O N -

Ventilation and lighting are provided by the draperVENT AVICARE HW system and controlled by the latest draperFORTICA control system, supplied by our Dutch partners Hotraco AGRI.
Heating is provided by the draperVENT AVICARE AHUs, with the hot water being efficiently produced by a Hoval UK manufactured 600kW wood pellet biomass boiler backed up by a Hoval 600kW LPG boiler. - T H E - R E S U L T S -

John is delighted with the whole system and finds it “dead easy to use”. The back-up and support have also provided great peace of mind and reassurance.

John has been achieving EPEF of 386 initially, rising to an impressive 418 with his last crop. A few months ago he rolled out Landmeco Gen2 (the latest version) and a Justsen straw boiler system from draperHEAT.

Science doesn’t support slow-growing broiler movement

In November 2017, German scientific consultancy and research firm HFFA Research GmBH published a comprehensive report evaluating the opportunity cost of moving all poultry production to alternative poultry rearing methods that are “extensive” or “organic.” The study, which analyzed the potential impacts in the European Union and Germany, defined extensive methods as those that: use slow-growing poultry breeds, render less efficient feed conversion than conventional practices and require more space per head. Organic poultry is defined as meeting the EU’s minimum requirements for organic production and labelling.

Omega-3 Chicken and Eggs May Lower Heart Attack and Depression

Regular consumption of naturally enriched omega-3 chicken and eggs is likely to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, dementia and cancer, according to the results of a six-month clinical trial, said to be a world first, delivered by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland on behalf of Devenish Nutrition.

After a pilot study, the 161 subjects in the clinical study consumed at least three portions of chicken and eggs per week that were naturally enriched with omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA), the same nutrient found in oily fish.

The results revealed an increase in omega-3 PUFA levels in blood and a positive shift in the “omega-3 index” which measures the amount of the fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) in red blood cell membranes, reflecting the levels in heart and other tissues.

Design is the silent ambassador of every brand, and in a rapidly evolving digital world, it’s getting harder than ever to stand out in the crowd.
Which makes it ever the more impressive that an agricultural company are leading the way in innovation and are turning heads all across the globe. We are of course talking about our Scandinavian partner and supplier LANDMECO. Their revolutionary designs have become the industry's first choice solution and as a result, they’ve now become the largest producer of poultry equipment in the world.

#Autumn is a season that's synonymous with the beautiful spectrum of colours that falls from the trees, however, the downside is that it also brings the often cool, windy and damp UK conditions that we've all become accustomed to.

With this in mind our state of the art 'AVICARE HW' climate control system for #broilers, has been designed specifically for these types of conditions.

We incorporate the new user-friendly, touch screen format draperFORTICA climate computer from #Hotraco Agri. We include our unique energy efficient air handling units to deliver minimum ventilation, hot water heating and uniform circulation.
Our technology results in a shed with the ideal conditions for the chick-start, keeping the environment fresh and the litter dry. We supply a comprehensive range of high-quality roof and wall extract chimneys, all fitted with fans from Ziehl-Abergg. Gable End Fans are from Termotecnica Pericoli. Inlets are our aerofoil design, from scan-air, with an additional hot weather deflectors.

These components allow draperVENT to provide growers with the very best system that the market has to offer. We guarantee that this will deliver outstanding bird performance, crop after crop, all year round - producing results that we work alongside our growers to achieve.
For more information drop us a message below and if you found it useful give it a share. Thanks

#TBTChallenge

When Preston livestock farmer, Robert Towers, diversified into a new area (Roaster production for H2S), he needed to work with a company that could support, encourage and train him to succeed in his new venture.
In addition to this, he also wanted to future-proof his investment, seeking a high quality, innovative design, combined with practicality and an intuitive management system. Besides this, the most important aspect was for the solution to offer a high performance in order to achieve optimum returns on his investment.

The #draperVENT Team were on the road last week as they visited Chris Harrison's Free Range Egg Shed to install specially designed AHUs.

They're slightly different to your typical units as they were built without heating coils, and had increased performance so they were able to ventilate the entire shed with mixed air and without the side inlets.

Q. How do you eat a chicken?! Don't worry, it's not the start of a bad joke and we've not forgotten the fundamentals of eating a meal.

The reason we ask is that the same answer/rule applies to both this question and "What is the best way to complete a goal?" A. You break it down into bite-sized easy to manage chunks/tasks.

Completing each one of these steps should logically lead to the next step and this should be continued in a linear order until the goal is complete.

#FridayFriendDay
As it's Friday we thought that we'd share an interview from when we caught up with our good friend and customer Ian Johnson.

To see the full video head to our FB page ➡ facebook.com/draperVENT

Ian is a leading ambassador for the Broiler Industry (even appearing on a Co-op TV Advert) and his Cherry Tree Farm is growing in size and performance with every crop.

We previously installed a Landmeco Feeding System at the site in December of last year and on his 1st crop he achieved 165g of extra weight and on the 2nd crop, at 41 days old, 260g of extra end weight.
He was able to directly compare the weights of the refurbed shed with his other 2 x sheds, which had competitor solutions installed. The positive results led to Ian taking a decision to replace the competitor solutions in the 2nd shed with new Landmeco Systems and the 3rd and final shed with a draperFORTICA control system. We look forward to seeing how Cherry Tree Farm develops over the remainder of the year.

For more info on Ian's roll out you can contact us here: -

Customer: Keith Evans

Today we take a look back at when our drone flew around Park Farm in Shropshire. At the start of the year the Evans family had 2 x new sheds 300 x 80ft with Justsen 995kW biomass boiler matched with Reka straw chopper and conveyor.
Keith achieved a 408 EPEF on his first crop, which was a very impressive achievement and since then his bird performance has gone from strength to strength.

Antibacterial Effect of MCFAs in Broilers

MCFAs (medium-chain fatty acids) with a chain length of 6-12 C-atoms, are widely used in the industry, mainly because of their antibacterial activity and their positive effect on performance. Trials show that MCFAs serve as an alternative, non-antibiotic approach to improve animal performance and health.

MCFAs can be an alternative to antibiotic growth promoters (AGP’s) in animal feed, due to their antibacterial activity. Sweden was the first country to start eliminating AGP use already in 1986. Other countries followed during the 1990s. In the meantime, the agricultural industry looked to find alternatives.

Netherlands Report Fresh Outbreak of Avian Influenza

#BirdFlu News: Avian Influenza has been reportedly detected in a commercial layer flock in the Netherlands and the outbreak is said to have infected 41,500 birds.

It is understood that the virus involved is a low pathogenic H5N2 strain which is the same virus involved in large outbreaks in the United States back in 2015.
The farm in question is located in the village of Sint Philipsland in the Zeeland region of the Netherlands and has received an immediate ban on the transportation of poultry, eggs, meat and manure.
As a result of the outbreak, the Hong Kong authorities have imposed a ban on all #poultry meat and eggs received from producers in the western province of Zeeland. This is another major blow for the Dutch poultry industry, as Hong Kong purchases one million eggs and over 2,500 tonnes of frozen poultry over a typical 6 month period.

The reports describe the Dutch outbreak as a low path however the news of the report will increase tension and raise concerns amongst European poultry farmers as we head towards the high-risk migratory bird season.

During the 2016/17 winter, the highly pathogenic H5N8 swept across 18 European countries, including the UK which was hit with a total of 13 confirmed cases of bird flu between December and June, although none of them involved commercial layer flocks. Additional cases of the H5N8 strain were also recorded in Egypt, India, Iran, Israel, the Republic of Korea, Nigeria and Tunisia.
For more information on poultry biosecurity and how to reduce the risk of disease this winter read our article posted in September: http://www.drapervent.com/how-to-protect-your-poultry/ ...and don't forget to give us a follow: draperVENT :) #draperVENT #Poultry #Farming #ClimateControl #Ventilation #Heating #TeamPoultry #FarmLife #Farm365 #AgChat #farmhouse #farmersmarket #farmers #poultryfarm #TeamPoultry #News

When we first met Peter Draper he was new #Poultry Farming and hadn't stepped foot in a #Broiler Shed before so providing the right type of equipment and supplying 24/7 support was of the utmost importance.

We rolled out a fully optimised draperVENT/draperHEAT package throughout 4 new broiler houses, including ventilation equipment as inlets, chimneys, gable fans, a turning pipe inlet drive system, and #Hotraco control panels for each shed.

We also installed 3 x AHU’s per house, 8 #Collinson Silos, a blending room, 5 feeding lines in each shed and 6 drinking lines in each shed. These will be winched and controlled by separate motors.

The boiler room now contains a 975 kW #Hoval wood pellet biomass heating system, a #Hoval STU 975 kW boiler and a 1200 kW LPG fired back up boiler system

If you're considering a move to Poultry Farming, get in contact and we'd be happy to answer any questions.

Smoke Testing Ventilation For Optimal Broiler Performance

#Ventilation is one of the most important but often mismanaged, aspect of broiler production. Sub-optimal ventilation at any stage during the broiler grow-out process can negatively impact the flock and the results at the time of processing.
The main purpose of ventilation is to keep the birds within a flock comfortable, or within their 'thermoneutral zone', while maintaining optimum air quality and removing excess heat, harmful gases, moisture and dust from the house environment.
When it comes to testing minimum ventilation and maximum ventilation, smoke testing is a good diagnostic tool. Using a persistent type of stage smoke, it gives another visual indicator of how air is entering the house, and at what speed and direction. Different ventilation systems will produce different patterns; our expertise is knowing what to expect and also what should happen to ensure the health and welfare of the birds. Different classes of stock also require subtle differences air flows to get the best performance.

The tests are used to prove a system, I.e. theory to fact, and to give confidence that a client is getting what was expected. What they get with Draper Ventilation systems is the correct specification for the class of poultry with respect to air change and distribution through all seasons. The maximum rates are based on proven specifications derived by agencies such as Silsoe Research Institute and ADAS, and modified as the birds' genetics have improved, to ensure the best chance of minimising heat stress in even extreme UK weather.
This is a level of service that is not provided elsewhere in the industry and is our attention to specifications that minimise heat stress. They can also be used to diagnose problems with systems, either in their design or due to incorrect setup. We are often asked to help diagnose issues with non-Draper systems due to our history of such consultancy over the years.

It’s Tuesday and it’s time for another #QuickFireQuestionRound! On previous weeks of #TeamTuesdays we’ve turned the spotlight onto Paul, Justin, Artur and Emma and learnt a little bit more about what makes the draperVENT engine tick.

Today like previous rounds a Team Member will be asked 10 Quickfire Questions and they’ll have to answer them as quickly as possible. The Q’s will start quite normally and will slowly get a little more difficult... 😊

This week’s it’s the turn of our Senior Project Manager, Andy Price, so without further a do… 3, 2, 1 GO!

Q1. When did you first join the draperGROUP?
A. Jan 2013

Q2. How would you describe your job to a complete stranger?
A. As a project manager working as the “go to person”, keeping the link between the customer and the final product

Q3. What is the least favourite job you’ve ever had?
A. Travelling around the world meeting customers. Hated that..maybe…. Q4. What’s the most interesting thing about you, that we wouldn’t learn from your CV?
A. I did a bungee jump above a carpark, but would never try a parachute jump.
Q5. What is your favourite quote?
A. There is no accounting for stupid….. Q6. If you had a time machine what time/event would you go to first?
A. The Oasis concert at Knebworth
Q7. Where’s your favourite place in the world?
A. Has to be Lake Garda. I got married there back in August and it was perfect.

Q8. If someone wrote a biography about you, what do you think the title of the book would be?
A. Here comes Victor Meldrew... Q9. If you could have any superpower what would it be and why?
A. To eat cake without gaining weight...I’m losing that battle badly!

Q10. What 3 items would you take to a desert island other than food and water?
A. A full drum kit (I’d love to be able to play them), a loud music system with a good variety of late 80’s and 90’s music, and large sudoku book (and pencil!) A BIG THANKS to Andy for taking part in this week’s ‘Quickfire Question Round’. Definitely some of the the most entertaining answers we’ve had! Did someone say cake… :) #draperVENT #Poultry #Farming #Warehousing #ClimateControl #Heating #Ventilation #poultryfarm #poultrylife #Farm365 #AgChat

The #Future of Modern #Poultry Production

In the future, poultry husbandry will ultimately go in a direction that will change the face of poultry production.
In the last 50 years, the poultry industry has been driven primarily by feed conversion and production costs. In contrast, animal rights, environmental and social issues will play a much larger role in future production decisions.

Robotics will be seen across the poultry industry, as producers focus on efficiency, and will also be more utilised for bird harvesting and mortality disposal, but will need to become much more animal welfare-oriented.

Extreme biosecurity measures will likely be observed and followed, and human access will be very limited, meaning improved biosecurity. Less contact with chickens contributes to the further reduction of antibiotic use, matching the demand for antibiotic-free products.

Water will also play a major role in the next few decades so technologies that optimise water usage and supply will need to be developed.

The strong anthropomorphic attitude of society toward animals is having a strong influence in poultry husbandry and production. This new driving force is pushing for changes in equipment, like improved cage-free designs, which is rendering progress.

Slow-growing birds and antibiotic-free feed will require closer monitoring of bird health, since birds will be in the houses longer, and the industry will likely need to find organic alternatives to treat birds. Much work is being done on that today, but the demand that the poultry industry will face will probably require looking at synthetic replacements.

#Excellence is one of those words that is hard to define without using the word itself, however, excellence by definition is often coupled with its adjoining role, i.e. an excellent engineer, an excellent farmer, an excellent footballer and so on.
So since what constitutes a desirable outcome may be different for each person, excellence is often uniquely defined and labelled by differentiating views.

Today is the final day of British Egg Week 2017 (9th – 15th October) and to celebrate it ‘British Lion Eggs’ have created recipes for Britain’s favourite breakfasts, whilst also partnering with the Queen’s favourite hotel ‘The Goring’, for some more mouthwatering luxurious options.
The Goring was recently announced as the new AA Hotel of the Year in London 2017 – 2018 at the AA Hospitality Awards and the hotel’s Michelin-starred Executive Chef, Shay Cooper, has provided his own personal tips & tricks on how the perfect 5-star breakfast can be made in your very own home.

As well as sharing the six luxurious recipes from Shay Cooper, British Lion eggs are unscrambling Shay’s breakfast classics with simpler versions for busy weekday mornings. Bringing a little bit of luxury to breakfast every day and showing that one or two ingredients can make all the difference when it comes to making delicious breakfasts at home.

Mr Cooper, says: “From our breakfast menu, the egg dishes are certainly the most popular, with the full English being a clear favourite. The Dining Room at The Goring celebrates the best in British food and the breakfast menu is no exception. “Our guests expect the highest standards of cooking, but it is also possible to try and recreate these dishes at home to celebrate the most important meal of the day. “What better time to celebrate the versatility of eggs than British Egg Week. The great British breakfast would be lost without eggs.” To see Shay Cooper’s six breakfast recipes head to our website ➡ drapervent.com ➡ Latest News

Just like Rome, self-improvement and business success isn't built in a day...Perhaps it feels exciting and inspiring to make a decision to change your life/business for the greater, but it means nothing when it isn't broken into small, incremental efforts and built up slowly.
A large push might do the trick for quick fixes, but when it comes to finding true success, you need to be willing to commit to your plan every single day, put in the necessary work at a consistent rate, and form healthy, helpful habits that aid in your personal/business development.
By the end, the sum of those small efforts will be much greater than a small burst of random focus.

Our good friends and silo partners over at Collinson were first founded in 1962 and since then have been enriched by three generations.

The family-run company has been in operation for more than 50 years, but when they started out they were actually only known for their agriculture focus. The company, now run by Dan and Sam Collinson, has grown to be a dynamic and diverse business which now operates in the Agriculture, Construction and Renewable sectors.

Their six-acre site is set in the beautiful Lancashire countryside, and they employ over 150 people who are all driven by the same vision and values - to design, engineer and deliver products of the highest standards.

Their comprehensive range of silos are manufactured at their site in Lancashire; and are complemented by a huge range of conveyors which transport the feed, and an expansive range of feeders and weighers to aid feed management.

Renowned for outstanding quality and longevity, all of their products have been designed to maximise feeding efficiency. The excellence of service and quality management is at the core of their company values.

Incredibly they have over 100 different models of silos, and have capacities of to 40 tonnes, meaning there’s a Collinson silo to suit everyone’s needs. Designed to accommodate a range of feeds and to suit many different applications and budgets; from a small capacity pickup, mobile silos, kit form models right through to the Premium County Range.

Plus all silos can be supplied with a full range of auger systems and accessories, such as: - Batch weighing
- Silo weighing
- Cyclone dust collectors
- Filler pipe extensions
