Photo by @amivitale | Zebras run through the Zambezi Delta. Wildlife in this area was virtually decimated by years of civil war, but investments in anti-poaching by @zambezedeltaconservation made the land welcoming again to animals. Zebra populations went from almost zero to many hundreds. Today, nearly all wildlife have come back virtually to capacity, with the exception of the apex predators. So the team orchestrated the largest international lion translocation ever undertaken. Twenty-four lions were transported from South Africa to the conservancy. It is estimated that that the population could grow to as many as 500 within 15 years; over 30 cubs have been born in the past 10 months.

Photo by @amivitale | Veterinarians wait for a lion to wake up from its sedation after being flown to Mozambique from South Africa and then driven to an enclosure. Twenty-four lions were moved in what was the largest conservation transport of wild lions across an international boundary in history. Decades of civil war and poaching had all but decimated the animals in this area, and careful management had brought back nearly all the other indigenous species—with the exception of these apex predators. So far all are thriving, and already over 30 cubs have been born since December. I covered this historic undertaking for my recent @natgeo story. Photo by Ami Vitale @amivitale | After years of civil war in Mozambique, lions were all but lost in the Zambezi Delta region. In 2018, conservationists, landowners, donors, and the Mozambican government came up with an ambitious plan to add some two million acres to African lions’ range. They identified 24 healthy lions from reserves in South Africa and relocated them to central Mozambique to the Marromeu Game Reserve. In order to keep the genetic mix as wide as possible, the team sourced the lions from various reserves in South Africa and kept them all in a boma in KwaZulu Natal’s Mkhuze Game Reserve for three weeks to complete medical tests. Then they were sedated and put in two private planes for the journey to Mozambique. Already, 20 cubs have been born since the lions’ release and it is estimated that that the population could grow to as many as 500 within 15 years. Photo by Ami Vitale @amivitale | Lions’ eyes don’t close when the animals are sedated, so they’re fitted with hoods to protect their eyes from the light. The hoods also helps to keep them calm should the sedative start to wear off. This lion was part of an international transfer of 24 lions from South Africa, the largest lion relocation ever undertaken. After years of civil war in Mozambique, lions were all but lost in the Zambezi Delta region. Just a few decades ago, prides of lions once roamed the game-rich wetlands of the Zambezi Delta. But their numbers were decimated when their prey was overhunted during the drawn-out Mozambican civil wars, which raged from 1977 to 1992. Across Africa, a similar decline is occurring, with wild lion numbers dropping 42 percent in the last two decades, mostly as a result of habitat loss. This translocation has restored this apex predator to its ancestral lands and it is estimated that the population could grow to as many as 500 within 15 years. Already, 20 cubs have been born since the lions’ release.
