Photo by Pete McBride @pedromcbride | Monumental Blossom: Every spring, the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C., explodes with thousands of pink and white cherry blossoms. The 3,000 trees were a gift from Tokyo Mayor Yukio Ozaki back in 1912. It was amazing to be there for this year's peak bloom, which typically lasts just a few days out of the two-week blooming period. Hundreds of thousands of yearly visitors offer economic opportunities to the Navajo Nation that oversees this land, but they also bring the risk of loving the area to death. Photo by Pete McBride @pedromcbride | Bathed in light and the prayers of a shaman, one man, among many, comes to this church to be cleansed. Here, outside of Antigua, Guatemala, worshipers follow a mixture of Catholicism and Mayan religion. This cultural blend means that, depending on who you ask, you'll get a wide range of opinions on Maximón, the Mayan god they pray to, ranging from mischievous to saintly. Photo by Pete Mcbride @pedromcbride | I spent years hugging the magic of this outdoor classroom—a mile-deep chasm in the world that some call the Big Ditch. Its silence, scale, starlight, geology, and rich history all help us feel and celebrate how small we really are. My film "Into the Grand Canyon," which documents our 750-mile hike through this seventh natural wonder of the world, is now available for streaming on @natgeochannel and hulu. Photo by @pedromcbride | With sleeting rain slashing the wings and our faces, we lifted off from England and lumbered toward South Africa. Despite modern radios and GPS, our replica Vimy flight reenacting the first air passage from London to Cape Town would take 58 days, flying at just 65 mph. In 1920 the original aviators made this journey in 43 days, crashing twice. Seventy-nine years later, in 1999, we crashed once but were able to keep the airframe going. Today, a century after the Vimy first flew, it's remarkable to think that a modern jet completes the journey in 10 hours. Photo by @pedromcbride | The Grand Canyon can only been seen in its entirety from outer space. It stretches 18 miles wide at some points and runs 277 miles long. The canyon itself is roughly six million years old but its layers of rock date back through the ages, with some being up to 1.8 billion years old when you reach the basement of this place. But the park that protects this 7th natural wonder is much younger, merely 100 years old on February 26, 2019. Happy Birthday @grandcanyonnps. You can see this iconic national park like never before in the new film “Into the Grand Canyon," in which I documented a 750-mile transect on foot through the entire length of the canyon over 13 months. My film captures the beauty of this shared landscape–but also its fragility and the risks of change. It is available for streaming via @natgeochannel. Photo by @pedromcbride | With roughly 5,000 left in the wild, the black rhino continues to face extreme poaching dangers for its horn that is biologically no different than a toenail. Amazingly, one place is bucking the trend. @lewa_wildlife has not lost a rhino, thanks to a network of protectors and protection that enable rhinos like Wai Wai and her baby to thrive. Amazed to witness Lewa evolve from a cattle ranch to a wildlife sanctuary that now boasts 14 percent of Kenya's rhino population (black and white). Photos by @pedromcbride | It took 750 miles, 13 months, eight pairs of shoes, two friends, and one camera to document this iconic national park, the Grand Canyon, revealing perspectives rarely seen before. The story of this transect on foot along the length of the only canyon visible from outer space serves as the backbone of the new documentary “Into the Grand Canyon”–out in time for the park’s 100th birthday. See vantages of this roofless cathedral and explore multiple views of how the park is poised to change from growing development pressures on all four points of the compass. Tune in February 21 (8 p.m. EST) on @natgeochannel to see the premiere. To learn more about this feature film, follow @pedromcbride. #IntotheGrandCanyon #intothecanyon #grandcanyon #petemcbride
