Video by @paulnicklen | This is perhaps the most beautiful thing I have ever seen underwater, filmed on expedition with @SeaLegacy last year. The veil that separates the ocean from the air is as thin as a dream, and to swim with sperm whales is to feel as though you've fallen into one. These gentle leviathans have thrived in complex family units off the Dominican coast for generations, probably for millions of years. Sperm whales hold the record for largest predator, largest brain, and loudest animal on earth—capable of making noise louder than a rock concert! Scientists have only just begun to understand these massive marine mammals. Follow me @PaulNicklen for more videos that showcase the beauty of the natural world and for updates from my next trip to the Dominica to swim with the sperm whales. #Whales #Science #Ocean #TurningTheTide

Photo by Mattias Klum @mattiasklumofficial | I photographed this Jameson's mamba killing a fledgling in Cameroon. Like other mambas, the venom of the Jameson's mamba is highly neurotoxic. It also includes cardiotoxins and fasciculins, and may also have hemotoxic and myotoxic components. A bite from Jameson's mamba can be deadly in as little as 30 to 120 minutes without proper medical treatment. Ironically it is the lethal characteristics of snake venom that make it so valuable and sought after for use in medicinal treatments. The toxic components of snake venom have, for example, led to the development of medicine for heart disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer's. With a bit of luck, the Jameson’s mamba may soon combat heart disease—and without hurting the snakes: Just a blood sample from one individual snake in the rain forest, and the snake was free to slither away. Please go to @mattiasklumofficial for more images from our film and photo projects around the world. #greenmamba #protectbiodiversity #science #zoltantakacs

I'm easily amused, lol 😂 but I found this wonderful painting in my travels on Instagram and I couldn't help but notice how much it looks like me in my purple pajamas! So a little bitty shoutout to @cellsoflife for making my day😘😘😘, love your painting Kathleen❤✌🏻

It may look like a veiny eyeball, but Jupiter's moon Europa is more than meets the eye. 👁️⁣
⁣
For the first time, scientists have detected water vapor above the icy moon's surface, giving us further evidence that oceans of liquid water may exist beneath Europa's crust. ⁣
⁣
💧 Water is one of the main ingredients necessary for life, making Europa an alluring destination for exploration. Scientists will soon be able get close enough to this intriguing moon to settle their lingering questions. The Europa Clipper mission, expected to launch in the mid-2020s, will survey the moon up close and sample molecules in its atmosphere.⁣
⁣
Seen here is a view of Europa made from images taken by the Galileo spacecraft in the late 1990s during a flyby. ⁣

Our scientists launched rockets from the top of the world! 🌎🚀 In the tiny Arctic town of Ny-Ålesund, where polar bears outnumber people, winter means three months without sunlight. The unending darkness is ideal for those who seek a strange breed of northern lights, normally obscured by daylight. When these unusual auroras shine, Earth’s atmosphere leaks into space.

Our scientists traveled to Ny-Ålesund to launch rockets through these auroras and witness oxygen particles right in the middle of their escape. Piercing these fleeting auroras, some 300 miles high, would require strategy, patience — and a fair bit of luck. This was our VISIONS-2 mission, and this is their story.

VISIONS-2 was just the first of many. Over the coming months, rocket teams from all over the world will launch rockets into this region as part of the Grand Challenge Initiative—Cusp, an international collaboration to study the mysteries of the polar atmosphere.

“That's here. That's home. That's us.” – Carl Sagan

Seeing Earth from space can alter an astronauts’ cosmic perspective, a mental shift known as the “Overview Effect.” First coined by space writer Frank White in 1987, the Overview Effect is described as a feeling of awe for our home planet and a sense of responsibility for taking care of it.

Flying through a fire cloud ☁️🔥☁️⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
This photo from roughly 30,000 ft (9 km) shows how smoke particles reflect light in ways that make the Sun appear blazing orange. Our DC-8 flying laboratory passed directly through a large fire cloud — called a pyrocumulonimbus — on August 8 as it was rising from a fire in eastern Washington, giving scientists a look at the phenomena. These clouds form when the intense heat of wildfires lift the smoke above the boundary layer, the lowest part of Earth's atmosphere.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
The flight was part of a joint NOAA and NASA field campaign called FIREX-AQ. Scientists are studying the composition and chemistry of smoke in the atmosphere to better understand its impact on air quality and climate.⁣⁣⁣
