Scenes from a coffee shop. Just returned from Ripley’s school where I read a book about Canada to two second grade classes. The kids seemed to enjoy it. The librarian had to translate because some of the kids knew very little English. A couple kids from each class were from Canada - Ontario and Quebec. They were my helpers and very eager to explain what a moose and maple syrup is. Now I’m at my fave coffee shop working on my #nanowrimo2017 novel waiting for Ripley’s bus and listening to a Japanese manager tell off an English speaking software developer with a translator. The guy getting reprimanded looks miserable trying to explain to what seems to be a very old school manager what agile is. I thank the universe every day that I am not working for a company (here or abroad) that doesn’t respect work/life balance and working myself to death which literally happens. Literally!
After being stuck in the house for a week because Rips had CP, I couldn’t have asked for a better first outting than tasting sakes from all over Japan. Also I love our new kappa sake cups. @junyamadera the Fukushima sake was a fave!! #sakeflea7#ilovetokyo
Just say no to borrowing ass oatmeal. We don’t have a lot of vegan brunch options in Tokyo so we’ve been making breakfast at home a lot more. I’ve actually never cooked so much in my life and I’m starting to experiment more and have fun with it rather than approaching it like a chore. Ripley devoured his breakfast so that’s winning for this Mom.👍Oatmeal, Raisins, Cacao sauce, Bananas, Cacao Nibs, Chia seeds. #breakfastofchampions#veganprotein
#TBT Buying handmade Japanese candy for the Robot Flyer box.
Does this disturb and anger you as much as learning about a human being raped? (The story and obviously this photo is about chimps but mentions the orangutan so that’s why this pic doesn’t line up. Source @nytimes)

I’ve been learning more about the strong reaction I have to certain noises. It’s called misophonia and basically means sound rage. Certain sounds can trigger a fight or flight response. There’s not a lot known about it and they don’t really know how to categorize it or how to fix it. What happens for me is that if I’m in a fairly quiet room and someone is chewing food or making slurping sounds I instantly get angry and I have an intense physical reaction. I either have to cover my ears or leave the room. For awhile I blamed Sean and Rips for being loud eaters. Then I started to wonder if other people experience this same reaction. There are support groups and even a documentary about it so I’m learning more and more about ways to cope. I have found that meditating helps me to calm down and manage my reaction better. I’m reading about how there is evidence that people who have meditated for thousands of hours actually restructured their brains. It’s a lot more dedication and time than western medicine but there isn’t a cure for #misophonia so I’ll use coping mechanisms like meditation and headphones in the meantime.
I have become a fan of Yabusame and this badass rider/archer who hit all her targets and looked elegant while galloping down the track. Yabusame, which is archery on horseback, is regarded as a form of prayer asking for the safety and prosperity of the country and society. ❤️ #horsebackarchery#yabusame#cultureday#japan#IMissMyHorses
Happy World Vegan Day! Ripley has been vegan his whole 7 years of life. Despite being left out from eating with the rest of the kids at birthday parties, school events, and separated from students in the cafeteria because he doesn’t buy lunch (just to name a few challenges), he has never wanted to eat animals or animal products. Imagine what it takes for a little kid to have that kind of fortitude and not waiver from his beliefs. I have cried so many times because of him being left out or made fun of for being “different.” We tell him all the time it’s his choice and he can try whatever food he wants. His response is always no. He doesn’t want to hurt animals and he understands one of the reasons the planet is in trouble is because of meat and dairy production. I’m so proud of my kid. There are a lot of reasons to go meat free, even one day a week, starting with your kids and their future. If my little kid can do it, so can you! #WorldVeganDay#vegankids
I don’t know what you’re doing for Halloween, but I was at the biggest Halloween party I’ve ever been to in my life. Millions of people wandering the streets of Shibuya, Tokyo. It was amazing but overwhelming. I think next year I’ll find a spot and just watch people walk by rather than getting stuck in the middle of the crowd with Rips as that made me nervous even though everyone was well behaved at least when we were there. I can imagine it gets a bit rowdier as time goes on. #halloween2017#shibuya#tokyo
